The Final Stretch- Finish the Semester Strong

Nafisa Nuzhat

With midterm season finishing up and final exams just around the corner again, it is easy to feel very burnt out. Your coffee consumption has reached unhealthy levels, your sleep schedule is now just a suggestion, and every notification from Brightspace makes you want to cry. It has been a long year, and now we’re in the final stretch, so here are five tips to help you survive (and maybe even thrive) as you power through to finish the semester strong.

  1. Create a comprehensive schedule and break down tasks

There’s a lot coming up, so it’s essential to keep track of everything. Start by organizing your remaining tasks and deadlines. Develop a detailed schedule that includes study sessions, deadlines, and breaks. Having a clear plan will help you manage your time efficiently and reduce feeling overwhelmed. If you have multiple assignments coming up, do them in small chunks. This makes the workload seem less daunting and allows you to make steady progress.

  1. Prioritize

Identify the most critical or immediate tasks and prioritize them. Focus on assignments that are coming up first or require more time, ensuring that you allocate more energy to those assignments/ exams that need it the most.

  1. Create a productive study environment

I don’t know about you, but with spring coming up soon and summer just a few short months away, I find myself getting distracted easily with planning for the future. It’s important to stay focused the next two months, and the physical environment you create for yourself plays a big role. Find a quiet and comfortable space to study, free from distractions. Organize your materials, turn off unnecessary notifications, and make sure you keep some snacks and a water bottle around so you can stay hydrated without needing to leave your study area too often.

  1. Take breaks

With the previous point being said, do ensure that you’re taking enough breaks in order to clear your head and recharge. Try the Pomodoro method when studying! Go outside and take a walk, or talk to a friend, or try Goat Yoga offered by the USC! Purposeful breaks will refresh your body and mind, keeping you from burning out while studying.

  1. Stay healthy

You can’t sustain a sharp mind without a healthy and strong body. Don’t sacrifice your physical well-being for academic success; one will not help you achieve the other. Ensure you get enough sleep, and eat nutritious meals. A healthy body contributes to a healthy mind. This includes taking care of your mental health, too. Prioritize your mental health, seek support from friends, family, professors, or on-campus healthcare providers. Don’t feel embarrassed to seek the help that’s available around you, it is there for a reason!
